Yesterday was the day: Yard sale and Holger buskin’ as a singing cowboy from 10:00 till 16:00. It was an incredible success.
I had been practicing guitar for at least one hour per day for a little over two weeks, amongst other things to condition my fingers to thicken their skin so that I would be able to actually play the guitar for this long. I also got some requests a few days beforehand and I sure as hell didn’t want to let those guys down so I looked up those songs and practiced them as much as I could. (Before this gig, my repertoire consisted of 20 Johnny Cash songs and 5 songs that my friend Uwe has written. Now I have a folder of about 50 songs that I can do.) I have played my guitar late at night since I got her, but last week was the first time my neighbors complained by banging against the wall. Ever. Might have something to do with the yodeling. But I digress.
The whole thing really started friday afternoon when I started to bake. To make a long story short: I baked cookies and muffins, following the recipe down to the letter. I turned 4 pounds of sugar, 3 pounds of butter, 15 eggs and some chocolate and blueberries into something that was supposedly edible. From the feedback I got, it wasn’t, but I was quite proud of my creations and I just had a muffin and I am not in very much pain. Fortunately, we have very good friends who are also very good bakers so luckily we had enough edible cake, pies and muffins.
Saturday I got up at 7 after 5h of sleep. I packed my costume (black shirt, johnny cash t-shirt, cowboy boots and Kerstin’s leather chaps) and my axe and drove to my moms place with Sunny who again helped us out as Kerstin’s backup. At my moms, Sunny and my mom took care of setting up the yard sales booth while I set up the cowboy place, said good morning and apologies for what was about to happen to the neighbors and warmed up the vocal cords. (By having some coffee.) 10:00 rolled around and I opened with Folsom Prison Blues by Mr. Cash. It had some serious goosebumps at this point – it was about 10 degrees cooler than expected. It was cold. I wished I had been wearing those leather chaps, but it turned out I don’t fit into them. So I threw on a sweater which was a bit warmer and made sure every single photo shot on this day looks like a Zoo York commercial. I wonder if I could tap them for some sponsoring ….
The singing was OK and felt good and I kind of appreciated singing to very few strangers for about an hour or so to get into the whole thing and to practice the requests a bit more. After a while it picked up and people started to arrive. Oh my, the people came. Even now, more than 24h later, I can still hardly believe the turnout. So many friends came by. Some drove a couple of hours to be there. Some took the subway from Frankfurt out into the burbs. Some I was expecting, a lot of the guys came as a surprise. It was at times hard to keep on singing or at least finish the song when people just turned up. The feedback we got for our trip was very positive. It is very reassuring when you’re doing something like this to see that it actually makes sense to other people as well and that they feel it is worthy of their support – be it baking cake, helping out with the yard sale or cash donations.
Some of the songs that I tried to sing:
I had advertised that I play any song people request – no matter if I know it or not. Only 4 people actually did this. The first was a neighbor who requested “Four green fields” which I totally slaughtered – even when she tried to help me out by singing with me. The second was Marcus from Spanish Class who requested Earnie’s Rubber duckie song. I think I got that one about 50% right. Third was my good buddy Niko who requested to sing “The phantom of the opera” as a duet – don’t ask. And the fourth was little Delisa who wanted to hear the Easter Bunny Dancing song, which I didn’t know. I made one up and got a little kiss for it, so I think she might have at least appreciated the effort.
After about 4 hours of playing, I got the first round of applause – which was also the time when most people were there at the same time. I played without a break for 4 1/2h when I realized that this singing and playing is actually quite exhausting. I was in the middle of playing a request (The Gambler – great song) when my voice completely failed on me and I needed to take a 30 Minute break, have a beer and just take a deep breath. Played for another hour until 4 and closed with Johnny Cash’s “Sam Hall”.
While I was torturing strangers and friends, Sunny was busy selling our stuff and handing out coffee and cake for donations. When we were done at 4, there were enough friends left to pack the car in about 10 minutes. We got the gas flowing and put some steaks on the barbie.
Bottom line: The yard sale was alright. Coffee and Cake were better. Donations were incredible. The final count of the day was 480 Euros in donations out of which almost 400 came from the cowboy box. (And I would like to point out that not a single Euro was paid for shutting up, though the offer was extended once.) A big THANK YOU to everyone who was there and donated. You help us making this trip possible with your donations – and you help us keeping our spirits up with your positive feedback.
Thanks to Rob & Frank for taking pics and videos, mom for the idea to do the yard sale or for letting me highjack it, sunny for running the booth and baking, sunny’s mom and Frank for baking and everyone who donated time and money.
