We are very happy to report that donations are starting to come in -via the website, offline and via bank transfers (saves the paypal fee).
We also received quite a few “substitute” donations. What’s that? April is no spend month which means I don’t spend money. This includes a lot of things that would normally just go out of the pocket like that:
One thing I noticed was that relinquishing these things isn’t too hard. With the right planning (i.e. always bring your own food and drinks) it works 9 out of 10 times. However, it’s a socializing problem. “Hey, let’s go out for lunch”, “Let’s have a beer” or “Let’s play some squash” just doesn’t work anymore.
The first time someone said to me: “You want a beer” and I had to reply with something along the lines of being a temporary ascetic for our projects, I remembered Alex Robertson. Alex works at Challenges Worldwide, the Charity that is sending us to Belize. Alex ran a fundraiser a while back where he tapped into the potential of micro donations. He did this by doing something cool (tough guys challenge) and asking anyone who thought it was cool to buy him a beer. However, they didn’t really buy the beer, they donated the equivalent of the beer. So here’s what I said to my buddy: “I can’t buy beer, I don’t spend any money at all. But if you buy me the beer, I’ll donate the equivalent into the trip funds.” I would have spent the money on the beer anyways, so it’s a plus in the trip fund.
Though I have only received three beer donations this far (there’s still a lot of April left though, if you know what I mean…), there’s been some considerable Squash court and Sauna donations that I appreciate.
The no spend month is going pretty well by the way, I think I’ve spent a total of around 10 € until today.
Bottom line: want to buy me a beer?
Übrigens läuft der Konsumverzicht sehr gut. Bisher nur ca. 10€ jenseits der Regeln ausgegeben.
