There was a time when Belize was famous for boxing. I love to read Ian Vasquez’s books about Belize – the last one I read focusing on a boxer from Belize City. In the 30′s, pro fights regularly sold out the Bird’s Isle (where we now go for friday night happy hour once in a while.)
I have never been to a boxing fight. Don’t get me wrong – I’m all for watching controlled and trained violence by two athletes who are in it voluntarily. The reason I’ve never been to a fight is that the fights in Germany have a rather unattractive price (very high) to likeliness-to-disappoint (high) ratio.
Last saturday, I found myself in the Princess Hotel and Casino with 3 other guys sipping beer ring-side on a boys night out. The evening was all about Belize vs. Guatemala with 6 fights having Belizeans fighting Guatemalans. This was fun as the age-old tension feud with Guatemala (who are still claiming Belize is theirs to some degree) added some emotion to the fights. At the same time it was a drag (literally) as we had to listen to an about 1 hour long club remix of the Guatemalan national anthem before seeing fists flying.
I won’t pretend I know about boxing as most of my martial arts training evolved around quick kicks in the groin, fingers to eyes or breaking limbs. But I did enjoy the fights. Belize won the last and first and got a “technical draw” in one fight, after the fighter creatively promoting a hit in his liver as a cheap shot.
After having fun at the amateur boxing, we went to a friends house to watch the Mayweather fight. And there it was again – pro boxing is just a big waste of time and money.
Here are some pictures. The lighting was bad and the beer was good and you know the old photographers trick: “If you’re photos are shit, turn them black and white and declare them art”.
Cool pics! I just wrote about the same sort of match up in San Pedro.
